A morning routine can have a dramatic effect on your life. This isn’t to say we must wake up an hour earlier to meditate or get that cycling class in. However, finding just a couple minutes to do something which will alter your attitude for the day, can have a profound effect over time. This is something I have observed and learned within myself. And I am not perfect, sometimes I catch myself slipping on my morning routine. But, seeing the power in it, makes me feel inclined to bring others to this realization as well. Practice makes progress.
For many of us, we wake up in the morning and our first reaction is to become consumed in our phone. We resort to social media to catch up with friends or receive updates from companies/media publishers we follow online. We subconsciously start comparing ourselves to others, or judging others in an instant based on how we perceive their postings. It can be such a negative start to our day depending on how you react to the postings you see, and what types of pages you follow.
Then you have the more traditional generation who turns on the television to receive news each morning. This media outlet is automatically generated stories rather than “following” particular pages which you’re interested in, but can still be a negative effect to start our day. And the reasoning behind this is due to the exaggeration in the media of all the terrible stories of what’s going on around the world or in the community. It’s almost like a robotic behavior to turn on the TV and simply be consumed by the media thrown at us each day. Yes, there is tragedy and bad things happen but that’s what they have to report because it gets attention and keeps people informed. However, it’s a very small percentage of the representation of the world. The media is always focused on more views which leads to more publicity which means more money in the end.
On the other hand, you have those who start the day with self care. Whether it be through exercise, meditation, journal/reflection, or listening/reading self help material. Yes, it is important to stay informed with the matters of the world, but is that really how you want to start your day? In a negative mood or perceiving the world to be this terrible place? Think of how that outlook shapes the rest of your day and even more, your outlook on life.
Therefore, involving yourself in an activity which will benefit you and therefore benefit others around you can have a drastic impact. Find an activity which fulfills you to start your day, and this mood will carry forward with you going about the rest of the day. And you know what’s cool? The more you practice this new behavior, the better you become at carrying this new mindset with you. You will slowly start to evolve, and the opportunity and possibilities which are presented from it are powerful.
So how do you want to start your day?
